Package Type

Designed as a Type A Package to the IAEA SSR-6 2018 Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material for single use shipments.

Certification

Certified as a Type A package for the carriage of radionuclides in solid or in liquid form (with absorber fitted for unsealed liquid contents) under non-exclusive use.

Description

The SAFDRUM^® 4089A consists of an Outer Drum (Design No 4089) which carries a resealable leak-tight Inner Container (Design No 4106) within a foam impact limiter.

The SAFDRUM^® 4089A Outer Drum is manufactured from high density polyethylene and has a tamper evident closure.  The 4106 Inner Container is manufactured from polypropylene with an EPDM seal and facility for fitting a tamper evident seal.

Containment / Shielding

The 4106 Inner Container provides the containment system.  The radioactive material may be packed in primary containers, such as vials or polythene bottles, which may be carried in small shielding pots if required.  The primary containers can be housed within packing in the resealable leak tight 4106 Inner Container.

No additional shielding is provided by the packaging, however shielded containers can be transported provided they are suitably packaged and meeting the package contents limits.

Approved Contents

• Solids and Powders (loose or compressed) up to A2 quantities.
• Liquids up to a maximum volume of 250 ml (if liquid contents are to be packed in a non-sealed primary container, sufficient absorbent material must be provided to absorb twice the volume of liquid to be transported).
• Maximum weight of contents (including primary containers and packing material) is limited to for 4.2 kg for solids and
  2.1 kg for liquids.
