Package Type

Designed as a Type B(U) Package to the IAEA SSR-6 2018 Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material.


Approved by the UK Competent Authority as a reusable B(U) package under the current SSR-6 2018 regulations for the transportation of tritium adsorbed on uranium getter beds (as solid uranium tritide).

Approval for other contents and of current validation for other countries may be available.


The SAFDRUM® 3605D is a Type B(U) package design consisting of a zinc or nickel coated carbon steel Outer Drum (Design No 3605), with a lid secured by a band clamp.  The internal stainless steel Containment Vessel (CV) Design No 3055, is held within a cork packaging set.  Within the 3055 CV, an inner stainless steel Confinement Vessel (Design No 0035, of which a number of variants exist) holds the uranium getter beds.

Containment / Shielding

The 3055 CV provides shielding (16 mm wall thickness) and containment system of the package.  The closure of the 3055 CV has a double O-ring seal arrangement with the interspace between the O-ring seals facilitating leakage testing to ensure that the seals achieve the prescribed levels of leak tightness.

Approved Contents

Specifically intended to cover tritium adsorbed onto uranium getter beds:

  • The maximum activities of the authorised contents are 4 PBq of Tritium and 6 MBq of depleted Uranium.
  • The maximum heat loads of the authorised contents are
    3.65 watts of Tritium and 4.04 microwatts of depleted Uranium.
