Croft begins consultancy on Type B Lite, a new transport package category

Croft is pleased to be working alongside Amentum in the delivery of specialist consultancy services to Nuclear Waste Services, assessing the feasibility of implementing Type B Lite transport packages in the UK.

Introduced through para 667(b) of the 2025 edition of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Transport Regulations, Type B Lite represents a significant development in the transport of radioactive materials. The new package category has the potential to bridge the gap between Industrial Packages and conventional Type B packages, offering a more proportionate approach for the transport of high-dose rate solid radioactive materials classified as LSA-II, LSA-III, SCO-I and SCO-II.

By removing the requirement to meet the full Type B containment performance criteria for these materials, while maintaining the necessary shielding standards, Type B Lite could provide a more efficient and practical transport solution for a range of radioactive waste streams.

Building on Croft’s internationally recognised expertise in transport package design, we are leading the feasibility assessment of containers that may be suitable for deployment as Type B Lite packages. In parallel, drawing on our waste management capabilities, we are working alongside Amentum in evaluating UK waste inventories to identify materials that could benefit from this new packaging approach.

This work will help establish the potential role of Type B Lite within the UK transport and waste management landscape, supporting the safe, secure and effective movement of radioactive materials.
