Description
Package Type
The SAFBOX is designed as an overpack that offers shielding for storage of solid Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) that is packaged in ‘unshielded’ waste packages. The SAFBOX is not designed as a transport package.
Certification
Licensing category: On-site storage only.
Description
The SAFBOX is designed to accommodate ILW and is primarily aimed at providing shielding for storage of ‘unshielded’ waste packages. The SAFBOX is also a robust container and will afford some protection to the waste packages stored within.
The SAFBOX is a shielded box manufactured in ductile cast iron and comes in a shield thickness of 200mm; internal volume and the empty weight are given. Other shield wall thicknesses could be provided as an option to allow shielding to be optimised against maximising cavity volume for different activity contents and optimising filled mass.
The SAFBOX with shielding of 200mm is designed to accommodate 4×500 litre drums in a stillage or a 3m3 box; standard RWM specification ‘unshielded’ waste packages. Other shield thickness can be provided.
Trunnions are shown on the side of the box for lifting the package although other options could be provided.

Containment
- Opening is rectangular (circular opening is available as an option)
- Closure via a ductile cast iron shield lid with bolted closure
- A filtered vent is provided to allow gas release but prevent particulate escape
Approved Contents
A wide range of waste containers can be accommodated. Various wall thicknesses of the ductile cast iron are provided to allow shielding to be optimised against maximising cavity volume for different activity contents and optimising filled mass.
Modes of Transport
By road or rail.
