IP-2/Type B Intermediate Level Waste
These Safstores are intended for radioactive material that complies with the requirements for Low Specific Activity Material (LSA) or Surface Contaminated Objects (SCO). For materials that do not conform to these requirements they can also be used as a Type B transport package with an overpack.
The 500 litre Safstore has been sized to accommodate a RWMD specification 500 litre drum for all shield thicknesses up to 300mm.
The 200 litre Safstore will accommodate an industry standard notional 200 litre drum at all shield thicknesses up to 300mm.
These Safstores offer a number of options for loading waste:
- ILW can be placed directly into the cavity (internal volumes up to 2m³ available dependant on shield requirements), or
- ILW placed in a primary container (e.g. 500 litre or 200 litre drum) within the cavity and at the time of transport,
- either the Safstore with the drum inside can be transported as an IP-2, or Type B with overpack, or
- the drum retrieved and placed in a transport package, e.g. the RWMD SWTC; in this case the Safstore could be reused.
To meet the performance requirements for a Type B transport package an overpack is required. This overpack is illustrated and details are available from us on request; it is based our standard design that is featured on our ‘large’ Type B transport packages.
