IP-2 Intermediate Level Waste
These transport packages are intended for storage, transport and disposal of radioactive material that complies with the requirements for Low Specific Activity Material (LSA) or Surface Contaminated Objects (SCO).
There are two different types of construction and shielding material available for these IP-2 transport packages:
- stainless steel fabrication with concrete shielding (Design Nos 3852 and 3954)
- ductile cast iron providing integral shielding.
The transport packages manufactured in ductile cast iron (DCI) offer the additional benefits of providing a robust waste package (minimum contribution from waste form to meet performance requirements).
The transport packages are designed to be acceptable to the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) for a variety of items of ILW that are intended for disposal without any further packaging or treatment.
The 4m Safstore, 2m Safstore and 2m half height Safstore have been awarded a Letter of Compliance (LoC) by the Radioactive Waste Management Directorate.
These boxes offer cavity sizes up to 19m³, and can accommodate a wide range of waste densities, waste forms, radionuclides (inclusive of the 112 radionuclides of interest to RWMD) and activities. Different sizes and wall thicknesses are provided to allow optimisation of waste volumes for different activity contents and for different gross mass limits for transport or plant. DCI offers a much more efficient shield material than concrete; requires less shielding for same benefit, and thus provides more space for the waste.
Selection of the most appropriate transport package for a particular product can be made with the assistance of the Product Selection Table.
