Croft Associates Limited Announces Contract for Design, Approval and Delivery of Type B(U) Radioactive Material Shipping Containers.
Croft Associates Limited, (Croft) announces that it has contracted with the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) to provide a fleet of Type B(U) radioactive material (RAM) shipping containers to MURR. Croft will design and manufacture replacements to the DOT Spec 6M and Spec 20WC portion of the MURR RAM shipping container fleet. As RAM shippers know, the authorized use of these (and other DOT Spec packaging) ceases on October 1, 2008.
These replacement packages will consist of two basic designs to transport a wide variety of research, medical and industrial isotopes. The 6M replacement package will be designated Safkeg-LS and the 20WC replacement package will be designated Safkeg-HS. The Safkeg-LS and Safkeg-HS packaging will offer a variety of cavity sizes, shielding thickness and as mentioned above, will be authorized for a wide spectrum of radioisotopes in both liquid and solid form. The Safkeg-LS will weigh less than 150 lb. (68 kg) when fully loaded, offering a distinct savings on shipping costs and adding to the user friendliness of this package. The second package, Safkeg-HS will allow more flexibility with respect to added shielding, quantities of radioisotopes and cavity sizes, enabling the safe, secure transport of large quantities of high-activity radioisotopes for medical and industrial users.
As is well known throughout the RAM shipping industry, the use of many DOT Spec packagings will not be authorized after October 1, 2008. This means that replacement packaging, such as the Safkeg-LS and Safkeg-HS must be NRC-certified Type B packaging as a condition of transport. The Croft/MURR joint effort capitalizes on the use of Croft’s demonstrated packaging design, testing and Type B certification prowess and MURR’s decades of expertise in the handling and transport of RAM. The design process for these new packages is expedited because it is based on existing Croft Type B packages already certified to meet International Atomic Energy Agency’s TS-R-1 standards in the international RAM transport arenas.
Along with meeting the immediate needs of MURR, these two packagings will also satisfy an important need for many USA RAM shippers currently using a similar size 6M or 20WC DOT Spec packaging.

It is this experience and strong design and certification basis which will provide MURR with the 6M and 20WC replacement packaging they need in a timely manner.
The University of Missouri Research Reactor
The University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) is a major center for radioisotope research and production. MURR makes thousands of shipments of RAM per year, with a significant fraction of these shipments in Type B packaging. The radioisotopes and radiochemicals are used in a wide range of therapeutic and diagnostic applications as well as in a wide array of research isotopes and as products for industrial clients the world over.
